Best News Kerry, Lavrov hold talks on Geneva conference over Syria crisis - Xinhua

PARIS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday that both his country and Russia are committed to the Geneva Communique that aims to coordinate the formation of a transitional government involving all parties in the violence-plagued Syria.

Kerry made the remarks at a briefing after his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Paris, where they discussed details relating to the preparation for the upcoming Geneva conference that aims to find possible solutions to the Syrian crisis.

Organizing a peace conference on Syria would not be an easy job, said Lavrov. "It is a very tall order," he added.

In their talks, the two top diplomats discuss the date and participants invited to the Geneva conference. "We believe this circle could be extended to involve all key outside layers who have interest in the situation," said Lavrov.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius joined the two top diplomats at a working dinner later. The three diplomats made efforts to outline details of the "Geneva conference II" so as to pave the way for a democratic transition in the war-torn country.

The Paris talks is the sixth between Lavrov and Kerry in 2013. Their previous meetings were held in Berlin, London, Brussels, Moscow and Kiruna respectively with focus on the situation in Syria.

During the discussions in Moscow, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on the organization of a new international conference on the Syrian crisis in the wake of the "Geneva Conference I" in June 2012. The initiative was widely welcomed by international communities, including the United Nations and the European Union.

However, neither the United States nor Russia have specified a date for the "Geneva conference II." Media reports said the conference could be expected in mid June.
