The House of Representatives has passed a Bill for an Act to prohibit marriage or civil union between persons of same sex for the third reading today.
Considered in the committee of the whole, during plenary, the House passed the seven clause bill which seeks to ban homosexual marriage in Nigerian.
Same-sex marriage will become a criminal offence and punishable by imprisonment of not less than 14 years if the Bill is passed into law.
Today, the House of Representatives amended clauses to include punishment for persons who act as administrators of same sex marriages and those who screen, aid or abet them. The House proposed eight-year imprisonment terms for these categories of offenders.
