Taiwan has been struck by a strong earthquake that killed one man and triggered a gas explosion.
The U.S. Geological survey put the magnitude of Sunday's tremor at 6.2. It hit at 1:43 pm, about 22 kilometers southeast of the city of Buli in central Taiwan, at a depth of 20 kilometers.
Taiwan's National Fire Agency said a man was killed by a rock slide as he was climbing on Mount Ali in central Taiwan.
The quake was felt all over the island, but most strongly in central and southern Taiwan, sending people running into the streets. The tremor was also felt in Hong Kong.
Another earthquake earlier in the day shook the southern Philippines. The 5.7 quake damaged dozens of buildings and injured several people.
Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.
